EWG Cleaners Tutorial

This tutorial covers how to verify the health and safety of any cleaning product using EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning search engine. It differs from the Skin Deep search engine (used for skincare products) in terms of the Hazard Score Rating.

Step 1

Click on the following link:

Step 2

Either enter a product type (e.g. All Purpose), select a product type from EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning pull-down menu (see screenshot below), or enter an exact product name (e.g. Attitude All Purpose) into the search bar.  Click search.

Step 3:

If you did a search on a product category (e.g. All Purpose), a list of products should appear with a Hazard Score Rating (see legend below) in alphabetical order from least to most hazardous. Select an individual product.

Step 4

On top of the Hazard Score, an individual product will show an Ingredients Concern table (see screenshot below).

The overall hazard of a product is based on the following four categories:

  • Asthma/Respiratory
  • Skin Allergies & Irritation
  • Developmental & Reproductive toxicity
  • Cancer

Almost every product has some risk of respiratory and allergy concerns so the goal is to choose products with minimal risks of Cancer and, Developmental and Reproductive toxicity.

Eco-Friendly Parents will always recommend products with EWG ratings of A.

Step 5

Finally, scroll down and there will be a list of the ingredients in the product from worst to best (see screenshot below), each with its own Hazard Score. You can now decide if this product meets your own personal health criteria or choose to perform another search.
