Healthy DIY Cleaning Options
Whether you're trying to minimize your carbon footprint or are concerned about the effects harsh chemicals may have on your family's health, switching to natural bathroom cleaners is a great choice. Although there are tons of "green" cleaning products available in stores, in most cases, it's cheaper and often more effective to make them yourself. And, chances are, your kitchen cupboard is already stocked with many of the ingredients. From cleaners made with fruit to ones with baking ingredients, Modern Bathroom's Erica Garland has put together a list of DIY options.
This is a great recipe for both the bathroom and kitchen.
- Baking Soda - 3/4 cup
- Healthy Dishwashing Liquid - 3 tbsp
- Lemon Juice - 1/4 cup
- Vinegar - 1/2 cup
Mix together all the ingredients and pour into a plastic container. Simply shake and pour/spray a small amount onto a rag or directly on the area to be cleaned. Scrub and rinse with a wet rag.
Note: If you are adding essential oils to this recipe and using it in the tub, make sure that they are pre-diluted in a carrier oil with a ratio that meets the safety guidelines of your youngest child.
This is a great recipe for oil burn stains on metal pots/pans or hard to remove stains in the bathroom.
- Baking Soda
Start by soaking the stained area with vinegar for a couple of minutes. Pour over baking soda while simultaneously scrubbing the area. Repeat until the stain is completely gone.
This is a great recipe for those that don't own a diffuser.
- Baking Soda - 1/2 cup
- Essential Oil - 8 to 12 drops
- Mason Jar
Simply pour the baking soda into a Mason jar and add 8-12 drops of your favorite essential oil. Poke holes in the lid with the needle and you're good to go. If you'd like to improve the look of the Mason jar, glue some pretty-designed paper to the top of the lid or tie a bow around the neck of the jar.
Note: If you're unsure about how many drops of essential oil to use, we recommend starting with less and seeing how it smells in the room before adding more.
Foaming Hand Wash
This is a great recipe that can be used all year-round.
- Castile Soap (Unscented) - 2 tbsp
- On Guard Essential Oil Blend - 10-15 drops
- Foaming Soap Dispenser
- Fractionated Coconut Oil - 2 tsp
Add all the ingredients to the dispenser except the water. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water, leaving enough room for the pump to be inserted. Screw on the pump, shake gently and you're ready to go.
